7 "BLDC motors combine simple construction and relatively easy control when compared with classical induction machines. BLDC motors dominate the mid- lower power range of motors today, and this technology will inevitably expand into more areas, likely being pushed by the demand for electrical vehicles." Pyter Ely da Silva Hardware Engineer, Whirlpool Corporation Even small errors in angle detection can result in operational problems, safety issues, or motor failures. Second, the controller converts DC voltage from the power source into the pulses that change the coil windings' polarity in the correct sequence and at the right time. When powered on, the coil windings generate a magnetic field around the armature. The interaction between the stator and armature magnetic fields causes the coil winding assemblies to move away from the like pole toward the unlike pole. To maintain rotation, the current must continuously be reversed so that coil polarities flip, causing the coils to chase unlike fixed poles. Commutation refers to reversing the flow of the current so that the field on the stator always opposes the magnetic field generated on the rotor. If you are familiar with brushed DC motors, you will note that BLDC motors differ primarily in how commutation takes place. Whereas brushed DC motors use metal brushes to generate current and a mechanical commutator to regulate current switching, BLDC motors use software and an electrical switch circuit for these functions. For this reason, BLDC motors are said to be electronically commutated motors. Depending on the stator windings, you can configure BLDC motors as single-, two-, or three-phase motors, with the three-phase configuration being most common. BLDC motors are classified according to rotor placement and winding connections: • Rotor placement: The most common type, inrunner BLDC motors, are designed with the rotor magnets inside the stator, as shown in Figure 1. One common misconception is about BLDC motors' current: it is variable, not alternating. This characteristic is powerful in terms of motor performance and customer experience.
