8 "BLDC motors are popular because they are efficient, light- weight, easy to maintain, and low maintenance. From a design perspective, BLDC motors are compact and easy to cool because the rotor field windings are replaced with magnets." Dr. Naveed-ur-Rehman Malik Motor Drives Engineer, Dyson Chapter One: Brushless DC Overview Here, the axis inside the motor rotates. Conversely, outrunner BLDC motors spin the outer casing around the stationary stators and windings. • Winding connection: Wye-wound BLDC connections are joined in a star shape with a neutral cable. Delta-wound connections have four wires, three of which are triangular connections without a neutral wire. From an engineering perspective, the absence of brushes and the addition of software-controlled switching afford several benefits over BLDC motors' brushed motor counterparts. BLDC motor designs: • Require less material to deliver the same amount of power. • Are smaller, lighter, and dissipate heat more efficiently than is achievable without brushes. • Achieve better speed versus torque characteristics at the same or smaller sizes. • Afford precise rotor positioning. • Allow for dynamic control of acceleration direction, speed, and torque using software. • Eliminate faults related to commutator spark. • Reduce electromagnetic interference. • Allow for multiple motors to be controlled from a single control device in some cases. Consumers also benefit from products with BLDC design and software-controlled switching. For example, BLDC-powered products provide on-demand performance and near-foolproof control. Consumers experience no power loss as torque increases, smooth control at lower speeds, and noiseless operation. In the long term, products require less maintenance and have a longer life.
