3 It is expected that by 2020 the installed base of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices will be nearly 31 billion worldwide. All of these IoT devices will be required to communicate with each other in some way and will require power to operate, and their power and communication ports must all be protected to some degree. This communication port protection may be for as little as mild exposure to ESD or the extremes of severe lightning or extended AC power surges. For the designer of IoT devices or any other product that connects to power or a communication port, transient surge protection is a critical consideration in producing a reliable and robust product. As the size of the silicon devices embedded into these IoT products continues to shrink, the more sensitive to ESD and other types of electrical transients they become. Sensitivities to ESD and other electrical transients apply to the smallest wearable devices, automotive electronics and even tower mounted communications equipment. Today's consumers continue to expect reliability and ruggedness in the products they purchase, and this is not possible without proper circuit protection. Bourns ® entered the circuit protection market in 1987 with line feed resistors. We continued to expand our portfolio with the internal development of our Multifuse PPTC product lines and with the acquisition of the Power Innovations Thyristor products group. Eight additional acquisitions plus substantial internal investment has resulted in Bourns' comprehensive circuit protection portfolio of overvoltage and overcurrent products. Bourns is now a leading provider of circuit protection solutions across many market segments including automotive, consumer, lighting, medical (low/medium risk), communications and industrial. This accomplishment has been done through investment in engineering, laboratories, regulatory committee work, and training. However, the core of our success derives from listening to our customers' needs and responding with application-specific solutions and new products that address their needs. Bourns offers an extensive product range; from extremely small, low capacitance ESD protectors to 100kA AC surge protective devices. From unique electronic current limiters and gas discharge tubes with FLAT ® technology to a broad range of standard semiconductor overvoltage protectors and resettable overcurrent protectors. This eBook offered by Mouser provides an overview of many of Bourns products and circuit protection solutions for a wide array of applications. Many of the products featured are a starting point for design engineers. Our engineers are standing by to provide support and information about the latest regulatory and safety requirements as well as to help you design, develop and produce the newest products and application solutions for your next circuit designs or IoT devices.
