34 ST/Industrial Sensing Solutions Living on the Edge Living on the edge is a common idiom. People who are said to be living on the edge are said to be a potential existential risk, living in day-to-day danger of falling off a metaphorical cliff. But in AI enabled factories "living on the edge" denotes data collection from industrial sensors generated from fac- tory automation, manufacturing equipment, and facilities to be analyzed locally at the gateway or edge node level. Living on the edge in smart factories—precisely the oppo- site of living dangerously—provides an additional margin of security and efficiency by allowing machine-level or building-level decisions to get performed without the need of cloud level analysis (Figure 3). Centralized " Decentralized Industrial sensors that have their data processed and micro-decisions made at the edge is a smart factory example of a movement from centralized decision-mak- ing to decentralized decision-making. The advantages of decentralized decision-making include real-time response, lower bandwidth, less computational resources consumed, and better overall decision-making. Predictive Maintenance in smart factories is a potential application for decentralized decision-making. Industrial sensors attached to a machine can measure vibration, temperature, and noise levels, among others. AI performed locally can infer the state of the equipment, any potential anomalies, and provide early indications of failure. It is feasible to have these systems communicate macro issues they identify or need assistance with up to cloud-based services to deliver data for specific analyses and correc- tive actions. Conclusion AI is on the factory floor. ST is the global technology leader in industrial sensors used on the factory floor. Taking data input from industrial sensors, AI enables more efficient end- to-end solutions. With AI and working on the network edge, ST industrial sensors offer the most applicable solutions for smart factories and industrial challenges.
