Intelligence at the Edge 18 HEALTHCARE Patient monitoring, remote diagnosis, and even surgery can benefit from these techniques. Patient records can be sorted and classified by machines employing ML and Edge AI technology. AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES Fighter pilots today are surrounded by a full complement of computers and artificial intelligence that assists them with flying one of the highest performance vehicles presently capable of being designed. Down-scaled versions of this are being developed for automotive applications. With Edge AI, sophisticated Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) enables the vehicle's computer to be in control, provide warnings, or take necessary actions to reduce passenger and vehicle risks. In time, technical advancements may offer a superior level of response to human intelligence with the outcome being safer driving than traditional driver-controlled vehicles. MACHINE VISION Machine vision provides machines with sensing properties somewhat analogous to human eyesight, whereby reflected electromagnetic radiation of visible or infrared light provides contextual awareness cues for the device. Machine vision allows machines to adjust and infer changes in dynamic environmental situations easily. NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING (NLP) NLP gives machines the ability to interpret the contextual and syntactical signs to interpret and respond to human language. Current and ongoing focus areas include speech recognition, customer service, voice-to-text, text- to-voice translations, and sentiment analysis. ROBOTIC PROCESS AUTOMATION (RPA)/ INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION (IA) This application includes robots, machines, and equipment programmed to perform numerous repetitive tasks usually performed by humans that may also learn and adapt to variable contexts and situations. This may improve productivity, lower costs, and increase worker safety. It may reduce pollution and waste, help with labor shortages or inconsistencies, enhance product quality, and drive improvement in harsh environments. Dynamic Growth and Business Opportunities AI edge computing is growing exponentially. This field is responsible for a host of new start-up businesses and opportunities. Allied Market Research estimates the current market size near $10B. They expect it to grow upward towards around $60B by 2030 (Figure 2).
