Advantages of magnetic components in electronics Magnetic passives introduce several advantages in electronics. For example, they are great at impeding sudden changes in current and stabilizing power lines thanks to the ability of inductors to resist changes in current flow via back electromotive force (EMF). They can also help to eliminate conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI), isolate circuits, impedance-match, filter, drive transistor gates, and sense current. Applications that particularly benefit from inductors include switched- mode power supplies, signal integrity filters, and radio circuits in which inductors are used for tuning. Challenges posed by magnetics Magnetic passives introduce numerous design challenges in electronics. They can be some of the more expensive components in a bill of materials because of the physical limitations inherent in magnetics, and low Q cores have poor performance, especially when used in filter applications. Poorly made magnetics can be susceptible to large eddy currents, which introduce losses, and higher direct current (DC) losses from poor-quality windings and materials. Inductive components can generate large back electric and magnetic fields, inducing transients, and magnetics can be difficult to reduce in size because of physical limitations. Poorly made magnetics for isolation or used in high-voltage scenarios can be dangerous; it is essential that magnetics have good dielectrics and proper galvanic isolation.
