Vishay currently offers 29 different photodetector cells
that are 7.5mm in size. The VEMD5080X01 is a low-
profile, blue-enhanced, surface-mount version measuring
5mm by 4mm by 0.9mm. The TEMD5080X01 is the most
efficient photodiode of this type. It has an opening angle
of 130° and generates up to 2mA at 0.52V under
1.5AM, converting with 16% to 19% efficiency.
The goal here is to eliminate the situation where
battery replacement is required frequently to
avoid system malfunctions or failures in the event
of an emergency. For example, smart meters
often required more power than was predicted on
the basis of simulations because the radio connection was
weaker than expected or ran into interference. Therefore,
the batteries in the field had to be replaced considerably
more often than forecast by the manufacturer.
