Introduction Today's cutting-edge light detection and ranging (LiDAR) applications rely on a wide field of vision, high speed, and precise accuracy to collect, process, and respond to 3D data in various conditions at near-instantaneous speeds. Current technologies enable LiDAR to measure the time-of-flight (ToF) of targets up to 200 m away with a precision of 1 to 3 cm and to provide ToF data at near-instantaneous speeds. Several factors are driving these impressive capabilities and the growth of LiDAR approaches, applications, and use cases: • The availability of smaller, more dense, low-power components that solve difficult design issues • Advances in sensors and sensor fusion as well as advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning • Advances in and maturity of geographic positioning systems and geospatial markets that provide access to data • Decreased costs of LiDAR development • The demand for ToF data that can be collected regardless of sun angles, low light, bad weather, dense tree canopies, and similar conditions • The demand for highly accurate ToF data that is easy to collect, process, and apply • The demand for techniques to sense, process, and respond in near-real time where both the base and the target may be mobile For these reasons, LiDAR has advanced to become a central method of measuring range across many industries and use cases. Automakers are among the first to build advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) that use LiDAR systems to sense, process, and respond in near-real time where both the base and the target are mobile. Other industries, such as industrial automation and robotics, are emerging, as are uses such as object profiling and protrusion-detection systems that require precision, speed, and safety. LiDAR has also begun to emerge in recreation industries such as golf and hunting.
