Imagine a sensor that detects an approaching object. This initial detection consumes very little power, filtering quiet periods where no action is required and improving efficiency. The next layer of the doll corresponds to a more complex sensor output that requires some computation—for example, identifying that the moving object is an approaching operator who must be identified. The final inner layer of the doll is only exposed to conduct the identification. At this point, complex models can be brought online to provide the detailed analysis required to make decisions. Imaging sensors support real-time decision making in AGVs/AMRs. These include navigation and safety management of the unit. For example, AGVs/AMRs can react to obstacles and change their path by finding the shortest and safest route possible to the destination using infrared and imaging lidar sensors." Arjun Sharma Automation Engineering Manager, B&R Industrial Automation This layered approach uses only what is needed, saving both energy and processing power. More Smart Sensing Use Cases Embedding intelligence into sensors provides almost endless possibilities in the industrial environment: • Factory security and anomaly detection—Sensors monitor for unauthorized entry, unusual motion patterns, or thermal anomalies, triggering responses without overwhelming security systems with unnecessary data. • Equipment condition monitoring— Vibration, temperature, and acoustic sensors equipped with MLC or ISPU capabilities identify abnormal conditions, which are often the early signs of wear or malfunction. That way, maintenance teams can schedule work before costly downtime hits. 23 Autonomy Meets Intelligence: Enabling the Future of Factory Automation
