Some rooms may have more than one. Bedroom, bathroom, living room, dining room, kitchen, garage—the list goes on and on. Let's take a walk around the various rooms of the Connected Home and look at some of the applications, technologies, and products that are making them capable and suitable centers for living. Security and Surveillance In our homes, one wants to know when people are coming and going. When we are gone or asleep, we want to protect against unwanted intruders. The Connected Home takes advantage of security and surveillance issues. Traditionally, a doorbell has been part of every home. The Connected Home allows the doorbell to be connected to the IoT, allowing you to know when someone rings your door by notifying you on your mobile phone. Many doorbells now are connected to security cameras and sensors that can turn on when someone approaches your front door, providing you with real-time video. This allows you to monitor who is approaching your house or if packages have been dropped off or disturbed. The Connected Home can also electronically unlock doors so that you can let certain people in, like an approved repairman, while keeping tight control of when and where the door is locked or unlocked. Burglar alarm sensors can notify you if the Connected Home senses an intrusion. Broken or ajar windows and doors may send out a notification or trigger an alarm. Facial recognition is a sophisticated analogy of a person's visual sensing function, ensuring that access is granted to appropriately authorized personnel (Figure 1). Smoke detectors can sound the alarm if the sensors are triggered, providing homeowners with the earliest warning of potential impending disaster and notifying authorities to promptly take action. Security and surveillance applications are an ideal application for the Molex SlimStack Connector Family. These board-to- board connectors offer a wide selection of low-profile, narrow width options in various mated heights and circuit sizes. With pitches of 0.35mm to 2.00mm, SlimStack Connectors offer mating heights between 0.60mm and 16.00mm and mating widths from 2.00mm to 7.20mm. Circuits start at 10, with ranges up to 200. Also, consider the Molex Pico-Lock SMT Wire-to-Board Connectors, which offers a unique side positive- lock design and high current handling capacity for Connected Home applications. Available in both 1.00mm and 1.50mm pitch versions, the Pico-Lock wire-to-board system offers an ideal combination of low profile, high current, and durable locking for any application requiring space savings and secure mating retention. Entertainment Everyone loves a good movie. Perhaps tonight you will go home, make popcorn, and watch The Wizard of Oz. Smart televisions allow viewers to record hundreds of hours of their favorite programs and play them back at their convenience. Smart televisions can also be used as gaming stations, providing endless hours of entertainment for people inside one home or through multi-player group experiences. Streaming media allows for access to the latest news, weather, and information. Wireless and multi-room audio interfaces let Beethoven or Rock Figure 1: Connected Home Security and Surveillance. 19
