Should I Use an IoT
Gateway in My IIoT
Solution Design?
IoT gateways continue to be standard
components in many Industrial IoT (IIoT) solution
designs. A typical IoT gateway is a combination
of hardware and software that provides a way
to connect local sensors and actuators to
backend systems, such as IoT services running
in a cloud computing environment. Physically,
they often resemble a small industrial computer
or networking device, such as a Wi-Fi router.
Internally, they tend to run either a Linux-based
or proprietary operating system that provides
standard operating system services as well as
the ability to run custom application programs
directly on the gateway.
Deciding whether to use
an IoT gateway in your
solution design involves
weighing multiple
factors. What are the
elements you need to
consider when making
this decision? How can
recent advancements
in cloud and edge
computing affect
this decision?
