MOTION CONTROL IN ROBOTICS By TE Connectivity At the heart of every robot design is the physics of motion. How motion is accomplished (i.e., what type of motor), how it gets controlled with precision, how much energy it consumes, and how its optimal operating conditions are measured and maintained through sensors. This holds across a variety of robotic functions, from pick-and-place, to paint application, to materials handling. Engineering teams integrating motors today are using increasingly compact designs, yet these designs combine more functions than ever. Motors' internal data and power interfaces must be connected quickly, reliably, and efficiently. TE Connectivity's supports customers with everything from proven, standard connectors and customized cable assemblies on the outside—to the latest sensor and magnet wire innovations inside the motor. Let's take a look at the main types of motors at the heart of today's smart factory robots. SERVO MOTOR Servo Motors are becoming increasingly popular due to their high efficiency, especially in material handling systems. With the integration of controls, servo motors are more and more replacing hydraulic and pneumatic driven systems. From the inside to the outside, TE offers magnet wire automation, resolvers for reliable position feedback, and a variety of reliable circular and rectangular connectors. One example is the INTERCONTEC M12 single-cable connection solution in the 630V power class. The INTERCONTEC M12 speedtec connector is specially made for small-sized single cable servo-motors. It is—like the more extensive system—equipped with "rotatable angled receptacles" which are essentially angled motor connectors with individually adjustable cable outlet directions. Critically, it also has 25G vibration resistance. LINEAR MOTOR Linear motor systems meet the need for low friction and high flexibility. To enable easy installation of linear motors, TE offers a broad range of quick connect solutions, which allow easy and fast installation while providing reliable performance over time. SPINDLE MOTOR Driven by advancements in machine tools, which require high precision and reliability, spindle motors are becoming the heart of modern production systems.
