Those finer calculations are also necessary to further shrink PDNs until they become
embedded technology. Work is currently underway to make power distribution itself a
package or part of a component package, which means that PDNs and the devices they
power can shrink drastically.
Most companies today engineer their power distribution by copying a published reference
design or cutting and pasting a design that worked for them in the past. That approach
will not enable them to address the demands of increased density, increased switching
frequencies, moving power closer to processor cores, and improving efficiency. Fresh
approaches are needed in the way engineers select and integrate passive components to
