stations and vehicles are often made by different entities. For instance, the on- vehicle charging system in an EV may be designed by the automotive manufacturer while the EVSE may be designed by a government utility company. When these systems are designed by two completely different entities, ensuring maximum interoperability between designs becomes difficult, eventually leading to diminished performance and efficiency. Therefore, EV charging solutions (both chargers and on-vehicle systems) must adhere closely to industry standards. Industry standards that help guide the design of EV charging solutions include the International Electrotechnical Commission's (IEC's) and SAE International's safety standards, ISO standards, and protocols such as the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP). By designing to meet these standards, EV and EVSE designers can have confidence that their charging solutions will behave well with one another, even if they are designed independently. NXP offers EV charging solutions that do the following: • Include high-accuracy energy measurement products, smart and secure controllers, wired and wireless connectivity solutions, secure elements, and analog interface products • Ensure high levels of safety and security through the EdgeLock ® SE050 Plug & Trust Secure Element Family • Feature secure element technology, which provides crypto protocols for secure communication with the EV- compliant ISO 15118 and secure storage for credentials and service provider– specific data • Adhere to industry standards including those from IEC, SAE, and ISO C h a p t e r 3 | D e s i g n i n g E V C h a r g i n g S o l u t i o n s One of the biggest challenges facing designing EV charging stations is designing with maintenance in mind. The added layer of fitting in all the components for a technician to easily and rapidly change out has proven challenging, but is addressed in most new generations of charging hardware hitting the market today."
