FUTURE TRENDS IN
MEMS
While MEMS already marks a significant improvement
over its predecessors, the technology still has much
room to grow.
One emerging trend in the field of MEMS is the
integration of intelligence into the overall solution.
Specifically, the industry is seeing the integration
of processing cores with MEMS sensors, such that
the devices can perform on-edge computation. By
adding a microcontroller equipped with machine
learning algorithms to the MEMS sensor, the
devices are becoming more intelligent and capable
of decision-making in real time. This approach is a
stark contrast to traditional schemes that rely on the
use of external computing resources or even cloud
computing to analyze sensor data.
I expect trends around miniaturization,
improved performance, and accuracy
to continue. The possibilities I am most
excited about are multifunctional MEMS
and the possibility of AI integration
directly at the sensor level, which could
usher in a new era of automation not
possible with today's technologies."
