Introduction Among all of the technological innovations that have paved the way for modern electronics, few are more important than micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). Despite their ubiquity and popularity, the majority of the population has probably never even heard of MEMS. MEMS are integrated devices that combine electrical and mechanical components to achieve sensing, control, and/or actuation on the microscale. Fabricated using integrated circuit (IC) batch processing techniques, MEMS devices share a common silicon substrate. Thanks to this unique fabrication, MEMS offer many significant benefits as compared to historical approaches to sensing and positioning. One such benefit is a significant reduction in unit cost. Benefiting from the economies of scale of IC manufacturing processes, MEMS devices can be produced in large quantities for very low prices. Beyond cost, MEMS have led to the miniaturization of sensing devices. Whereas historical systems require large mechanical parts, MEMS exist on the microscale. Because of these benefits, MEMS have enabled the introduction of advanced sensing into everyday devices like consumer electronics and vehicles. Most notably, MEMS have enabled huge advances in solutions such as inertial measurement units (IMUs) and leveling devices. Almost any device you own today contains some form of MEMS technology. In this eBook, we'll further explore the benefits and applications of MEMS technology, and examples of how Murata is leading the way for the MEMS industry as a whole. Mighty Guides make you stronger.
