And this is a true challenge with today's pace of
innovation and product development. This is why
highly integrated solutions are the driver for a highly
flexible and innovative industry.
Motor drives can also significantly contribute to how
efficiently systems operated by motors consume
energy. As mentioned previously, historically,
many motor-driven loads have been operated at
fixed speeds because of the motor's direct grid
connection. Regulation of load operation must
then be carried out by mechanical means such as
mechanical linkages or valves, and flow regulators
in the case of fluidic systems. This regulation can
have significant efficiency implications for systems
operating at partial load or light load for substantial
periods, as large gearing ratios or pressure drops
must be sustained to match the motor's fixed speed
with the load operating point.
By contrast, inverter-fed motors allow precise
control over motor speed and torque, enabling these
parameters to be matched to the load operating
point at all times. This matching can result in
overall system efficiency improvements in
