Predictive maintenance is another application of AI and ML in robotics. By continuously monitoring robot performance and analyzing sensor data, AI algorithms can predict when a component will likely fail. This insight allows maintenance teams to address issues before they lead to costly breakdowns. For example, by detecting patterns in sensor data, AI-driven predictive maintenance can indicate wear in a robotic arm or overheating in a motor—allowing technicians to replace or repair parts proactively, thereby reducing unplanned downtime and increasing overall efficiency. Decision-making driven by AI requires substantial computing power, as robots must analyze and process complex data from various sensors to make informed decisions. Many industrial robots use system-on-modules that combine AI processors with components such as graphics processing units, field- programmable gate arrays, and ARM processors to meet these demands. By reducing the need for external data transmission, this combination of hardware enables robots to perform high- speed processing on-site. For example, a robot in a logistics warehouse might use AI to determine the most efficient path to transport items from storage to a packing station. The robot would rely on vision systems to identify obstacles, radar to monitor movement around the obstacle, and predictive algorithms to adjust to new items in the workflow. By using onboard AI processing, the robot can make quick adjustments, avoid collisions, and optimize routes without constant communication with a central processing unit.
