Introduction In the past 10 years, the world has seen an enormous proliferation of batteries in almost every industry. But beyond the battery itself, a lesser discussed but equally important component is the underlying battery management system (BMS). Put simply, a BMS is an electronic control circuit that monitors and regulates the charging and discharging of batteries in a system. A BMS is intended to fulfill three key missions: 1. Inform the system about the amount of charge available in the battery—commonly known as the state of charge (SOC). 2. Ensure that the battery is used in optimal conditions to increase its lifetime—commonly known as the state of health (SOH). 3. Protect the battery from fault conditions that could cause thermal runaway or other damage to the battery cells—commonly known as battery fault protection. To achieve these functions, a BMS incorporates a variety of sensor/measurement components that help monitor variables such as temperature, voltage, and current. Specifically, a BMS often consists of a combination of dedicated battery management integrated circuits, microcontrollers, current sense (shunt) resistors, negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistors, optocouplers for galvanic isolation, transient-voltage-suppressor diodes for transient protection, precision resistors as voltage dividers, and power metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) and resistors for cell balancing. In this eBook, we discuss the major design considerations and challenges surrounding a proper BMS and the ways that Vishay helps its customers achieve the best performance and reliability for battery systems.
