A key indicator of a good energy storage system is its predictability, and systems tend to perform very differently with increased age or low energy. Monitoring the SOC and SOH gives us the predictability needed to integrate a battery system into a high-performance product." Luis Guerrero AguiƱaga ESS/BMS System Designer, H55 C h a p t e r 1 | S t a t e O f C h a r g e ( S O C ) a n d S t a t e o f H e a l t h ( S O H ) Like SOC, SOH can be measured in various ways, but ultimately, the measurements are all estimations. One major challenge of SOH measurements is that each individual cell has a different aging profile. Thus, a BMS needs to individually measure a cell's SOH and use that cumulative information to make decisions and optimize algorithms. Achieving these tasks requires large systems that can interface with hundreds or even thousands of cells and algorithms capable of properly sorting through all the data. Another major challenge is the need for accuracy, which, like for SOC, necessitates extremely reliable and accurate peripheral components. Vishay helps customers design BMSs that can accurately measure SOC and SOH by offering high- accuracy components with tight tolerances. 7 8 Industry Experts Discuss Battery Management Solutions
