Managing Component Pricing Shifts

Although recent product shortages have decreased, pricing remains unpredictable. Procurement teams must strategize, manage risk, and determine which components are needed during volatile market conditions. To achieve these objectives, procurement professionals must learn the underlying factors behind recent shortages, understand the current market, and develop effective purchasing strategies as pricing fluctuations continue.

Contributing Factors

The electronics industry is cyclical. When demand for semiconductors, passives, or printed circuit boards (PCBs) stabilizes, prices decrease. However, as shortages occur, prices increase. For example, as of Q2 of 2025, DDR4 memory parts are in low supply. This has led to contract prices rising. Procurement teams must strike a balance by avoiding excess stock in one cycle and shortages in the next.[1]

Any interruption in production or logistics, such as a pandemic-era shutdown, port congestion, or factory fire, results in higher costs. Nevertheless, certain components, like aluminum or plastic capacitors, maintain 25- to 27-week lead times, keeping prices high. For procurement professionals, budgeting for future delays is essential.[2]

Components depend on commodities such as copper, resins, and silicon wafers. If raw material or energy costs rise, manufacturers pass those costs to the consumer. For example, supply chain disruptions from 2021 to 2024 increased input and raw material costs for many electronics manufacturers. Procurement professionals must account for these risk factors in total cost models.[3]

A key lesson here is that cost risks begin in the design phase. If a board is compatible with only a single component, buyers have no other options when that part’s price increases. However, if engineers designed a product compatible with multiple formats, procurement teams could source the more cost-effective format at the time. Design and engineering teams should recognize that these small design choices can help protect budgets.

While these pricing factors are broad, specific findings from the 2025 market can provide more insight.

Signals from the 2025 Market

Even though the component market has calmed compared to previous years, it is still not entirely stable. For example, memory and high-performance components are some of the least stable categories. As of Q4 of 2025, components such as DDR4, DDR5, SSD, and NAND Flash are facing pricing increases of 25 to 58 percent as compared to the previous quarter. Professionals must assess all component categories separately. Forecasts that group all memory or all semis together, for example, risk missing cost pressures in constrained segments.[4]

Additionally, teams must consider the impact of increasing lead times and supply delays. As of Q4 of 2025, the average capacitor lead time was around 19 weeks, up 46 percent as compared to pre-pandemic lead times. Industries like automation and robotics depend on these components. Procurement teams should account for extra time and higher prices when these shortages occur.[5] 

Tariff adjustments and trade policies also continue to affect pricing. In many imports across various industries, freight, duties, and tariffs add 5 to 15 percent to landed costs.[6] Procurement professionals must budget for these increased costs. However, reshoring has some benefits, such as faster lead times and reduced supply chain risk.[7] Although per-unit costs may be higher, domestic sourcing can be more economical.

With many of these pricing challenges unlikely to change drastically in the near future, purchasing professionals should consider several strategies to move forward.

Strategies for Navigating Pricing Changes

Procurement professionals cannot control volatile markets, but they can control how they respond to market changes. The most effective strategies are designed to cushion the impact of unpredictable costs.

Building Supplier Relationships

Relying on a single supplier can present certain risks when parts become scarce. By qualifying alternate sources ahead of time, procurement can stay flexible during shortages. Not every part has an easy alternative, but spreading demand across multiple suppliers reduces the risk of paying too much when one source runs out.[8]

Suppliers appreciate customers who provide accurate forecasts and place orders consistently, as this reduces the risk of accumulating stock that might not sell. Customers who forecast clearly and maintain strong supplier relationships can be prioritized for allocation. Others may face delays and higher prices. When procurement teams communicate consistently with suppliers, they can secure steadier pricing when markets tighten.

Managing Contracts

Contracts help protect against price swings, but they can also constrain buyers. For example, DDR4 contract prices increased around 60 to 85 percent in July 2025, and LPDDR4X jumped around 38 to 43 percent in Q3.[9] Buyers with contracts in place before the surge could have avoided these spikes, but those with flexible review terms could also benefit if prices fall. Teams should secure pricing when the demand is stable and leave room to adjust in volatile categories.

Spot and contract prices move at different speeds. Spot pricing reacts quickly to trading shifts, while contracts adjust more slowly and are influenced by supplier leverage.[10] Historically, decreased demand and low spot prices indicate that contract prices will soon fall.[11] Teams should watch for these variations so they can act early, through strategies like buying before price hikes or holding back when spot deals are better.

Conclusion

While component pricing has steadied somewhat, it is not considered stable in today’s market. Procurement professionals can only adjust what they can control, which is why they should ensure their engineers are building with flexibility in mind, maintaining dual sourcing strategies, managing contracts carefully, and strengthening their supplier relationships. Procurement teams should prepare for cost shifts, not the chance that shifts will be eliminated entirely.
