C h a p t e r 4 POWER EFFICIENCY DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS Like many wireless and IoT devices, fleet telematic systems are often designed with power efficiency as a primary consideration. One reason that power efficiency is so important is the huge emphasis placed on connectivity. Because fleet telematics applications rely heavily on the ability to communicate with a device at any given moment, reliability is key. From a hardware design perspective, achieving the best performance of a wireless communication link comes down to the receive signal strength and transmit signal power. If the antenna is not efficient, then it's not effective. Unreliable communication means the radio will be forced to repeatedly send its signal until the signal eventually gets received, and this process wastes even more power. These issues can be avoided altogether by starting with a power- efficient antenna solution."
