The advantages of SiC also present engineers with opportunities to reduce the size of designs, improve device efficiency, and reduce total system cost. Depending on the application, engineers can expect SiC to produce designs typically two to three times smaller compared to equivalent Si designs. Additionally, because SiC devices generate less heat, heat sinks can be made smaller, reducing the total weight of a device; such weight reduction can be particularly beneficial for the electric vehicle (EV) market (see Chapter 5 – Integrating SiC Into Your Next Project). C h a p t e r 1 | S i v s . S i C One of the first requirements when switching from Si to SiC is to look at the target efficiency and power density of the application. The properties of SiC devices give designers the opportunity to improve their design's efficiency and power density so that they run cooler, switch faster, and operate at higher voltages."
