One enduring rule of sound engineering is never to reinvent the wheel. For good reasons, such as cost reduction, tight schedules, and reliability, software reuse is a proven best practice of software engineering. In embedded systems design, middleware is the software layer that sits between the hardware and the code that generates the user-facing application and functionality (Figure 1). Think of it as woodworking jigs. Middleware is not the raw material—the hardware or real-time operating system (RTOS)—nor is it the finished object (i.e., application), but rather the fixtures that make repeatable, reliable work possible.

Middleware provides an abstraction layer so the same application code can run on various combinations of hardware platforms and RTOSes. With middleware comes prebuilt subsystems—sometimes referred to as stacks—for a variety of functions, including:
- TCP/IP networking
- USB device/host
- Bluetooth®/Bluetooth Low Energy
- File Systems (FAT, LittleFS)
- Graphics/UI frameworks
- Audio pipelines
- Security (TLS, cryptographic engines)
Let’s give a specific example to help solidify the understanding of middleware as a translator. Let’s say we are building an IoT device with wireless data connectivity. Ideally, the application code shouldn’t care whether it is running on different 32-bit microcontroller families or wireless systems-on-chip (SoCs) from different vendors. The problem is that hardware has very specific and unique characteristics, such as pin names, register-level commands, peripheral layouts, clock trees, direct memory access (DMA) behavior, interrupt structure, radio stacks, and power modes. If we let those details leak directly into the application layer, the codebase quickly becomes a mess of #ifdefs, board-specific hacks, and fragile assumptions. This is where middleware proves helpful, providing a standard command (e.g., send_message[ ]) to the application developer and, in turn, handling the messy, complex details of making the specific hardware send the data.
Behind this simple call, the middleware handles all the complexity required to make the transmission happen. It selects the appropriate driver, manages buffers, handles retries and timeouts, coordinates with the RTOS scheduler, and invokes the correct hardware-specific routines through the hardware abstraction layer (HAL). The application never sees register writes, interrupt handlers, or radio state transitions—it only ever sees a reliable communication service.
Crucially, when the hardware changes, most application code can remain unchanged. In Zephyr-style stacks, hardware differences are captured in the devicetree (board/SoC description), while software features are selected with Kconfig, keeping hardware-specific changes in the board support package (BSP) or HAL and leaving application logic largely intact. The middleware acts as a translation layer, converting application intent (e.g., “send this data”) into platform-specific actions (e.g., “toggle these registers, manage this DMA transfer, wait for this interrupt, retry on failure”).
In this way, middleware decouples what the system does from how the hardware does it. That separation is what enables portability, scalability, and long-term maintainability in modern embedded systems.
The Engineering Trade-off: Build vs. Integrate
While middleware should be considered for every embedded system, there are situations where it can be excessive for system needs. These include:
- Ultra-tiny microcontrollers, such as 8-bit devices or microcontroller units (MCUs) with less than 32KB of Flash, where the memory footprint of a general-purpose stack can consume a disproportionate share of available resources.
- Hard real-time control loops that require deterministic, cycle-level timing guarantees, where even small layers of abstraction introduce unacceptable jitter or latency.
- Highly specialized or one-off devices with narrowly defined functionality, where portability and reuse are not meaningful design goals.
In these cases, developers may write bespoke lightweight layers instead. Deciding when to adopt third-party middleware versus writing a tailored solution is a critical architectural decision (Table 1). While middleware accelerates development, it introduces dependencies and a learning curve. Technical teams should evaluate the following criteria when considering off-the-shelf middleware:
Protocol complexity: Avoid re-implementing standardized protocol stacks like Bluetooth Low Energy or USB. Qualification and compliance programs (Bluetooth SIG qualification; USB-IF compliance) impose testing and interoperability requirements that are costly to meet with a bespoke stack, while using qualified stacks or vendor software development kits (SDKs) typically shorten schedules and lower risk.
Regulatory certification: Using pre-certified stacks can materially reduce certification effort and risk. For instance, products can inherit Bluetooth qualified design IDs (QDIDs) when using unmodified, qualified components from vendor SDKs, while safety-related developments benefit from following the IEC 61508 functional-safety life cycle.
Resource constraints (Flash/RAM): General-purpose middleware is rarely optimized for the smallest possible footprint. If every byte of Flash counts, a bespoke, stripped-down implementation may be necessary.
Debugging visibility: Middleware can sometimes act as a “black box.” When a bug occurs deep inside a third-party USB stack, teams need the expertise and tooling to step through that external code.
Team expertise and life cycle costs: Middleware reduces initial development effort, but shifts costs to configuration, integration, and ongoing updates. A bespoke solution may be faster to write initially, but it becomes a long-term maintenance obligation that only your team understands. The right choice depends on staff experience, expected product lifetime, and how often the platform is likely to change.

The Challenge of Leaky Abstractions
Leaky abstractions are a well-known reality in software engineering. The truth is that any sufficiently complex abstraction will eventually allow underlying details to surface. Middleware APIs are no exception. While middleware strives to present a clean, device-agnostic interface, embedded systems impose physical and architectural constraints that software cannot entirely conceal. Timing behavior, memory organization, peripheral limitations, and silicon-specific quirks inevitably influence higher layers of the stack.
As a result, even well-designed middleware abstractions are rarely watertight in practice. Hardware realities, such as latency, alignment requirements, power-state transitions, or memory access patterns, often “leak” through the abstraction boundary, especially under edge conditions or performance stress.
A typical example is a generic file_write() function provided by a filesystem middleware. On many platforms, this abstraction behaves predictably. However, when the underlying storage medium is raw NAND flash, the application may suddenly need to account for erase block sizes, page boundaries, or the performance impact of wear leveling—characteristics that are fundamental to the hardware. No software layer can completely hide the fact that NAND flash must be erased in large blocks or that write amplification affects latency and endurance. In these cases, the abstraction of a “simple file write” breaks down, and knowledge of hardware becomes necessary.
This pattern appears across many subsystems. Networking abstractions may leak latency or buffering behavior. DMA-driven peripherals may impose alignment constraints. Cache coherency may affect data visibility across execution contexts. With all these complications taken into consideration, it’s key to note that while middleware reduces complexity, it does not eliminate the need to understand the system beneath it.
Successful use of middleware, therefore, requires more than familiarity with an API. Engineers must also understand the assumptions the middleware makes about the hardware and execution environment. A well-designed middleware layer minimizes these assumptions and delegates hardware-specific behavior to lower layers. In a properly layered embedded architecture, middleware should not hard-code or depend on low-level hardware details. When it does, it signals a breakdown in layering.
Preventing the Leaks
Middleware libraries should remain portable and device-agnostic, relying on the BSP and the HAL to handle hardware-specific details. The following categories of more information should not leak into middleware code.
Board-specific connections (BSP concerns): Physical pin numbers, GPIO assignments, and PCB wiring details belong in the BSP. For example, which MCU pin controls an LED or chip-select line is a board-level decision. Higher layers should invoke BSP functions rather than manipulating specific pin numbers. Middleware that depends on pin mappings is operating at the wrong abstraction level.
Microcontroller-specific behavior (HAL concerns): Clock tree configuration, timer registers, interrupt vectors, errata workarounds, and power-management sequences belong in the HAL. The HAL exists to translate generic operations into silicon-specific actions. Middleware should invoke HAL APIs—for example, flash_write() or uart_tx()—not interact directly with registers or hardware constants.
Peripheral instance and voltage-domain details: Decisions about whether a device uses UART1 or UART2, or which voltage domain a peripheral resides in, should be resolved below the middleware layer. These details are configured in the HAL, BSP, or build-time configuration files. Middleware should operate on abstract handles or descriptors, not on specific peripheral instances.
Timing and alignment constraints: Requirements related to buffer alignment, cache behavior, or latency often stem from hardware. Rather than embedding these assumptions into application logic, they should be handled in lower layers or expressed through configuration parameters. A well-layered system ensures the application does not need to reason about cache line boundaries or DMA alignment rules.
Mitigating the Impact of Leaks
If a supposedly generic middleware component directly depends on pin numbers, register addresses, clock-specific delays, or voltage assumptions, it violates separation of concerns. Middleware that “knows” about pins, clocks, or power rails is no longer portable. This tight coupling undermines reuse and significantly complicates platform changes. When hardware evolves, these hidden assumptions tend to surface, forcing unexpected changes in application code that was assumed to be hardware-independent.
Because leaky abstractions cannot be eliminated entirely, experienced embedded engineers focus on containing and managing them. The objective is to localize hardware-specific knowledge rather than allowing it to spread unpredictably through the codebase. Several best practices help reduce the impact of abstraction leakage.
Isolate hardware parameters in configuration files: Hardware-dependent values should be centralized in configuration headers or modules rather than embedded in application logic. For example, if a filesystem middleware needs to know flash erase block size or page size, those values should be defined in a configuration file (e.g., #define NAND_BLOCK_SIZE 4096). This keeps hardware assumptions explicit, documented, and easy to modify when the hardware changes.
Maintain clear layer boundaries (BSP and HAL usage): Software should be structured so that only the BSP and HAL interact directly with hardware. Middleware should call into these layers rather than accessing hardware resources itself. If a networking stack needs to reset a radio, it should invoke a BSP function. If a storage layer needs to erase flash, it should call a HAL service. This discipline prevents hardware details from creeping upward and simplifies porting to new platforms.
Document assumptions and constraints: Middleware inevitably relies on assumptions about timing, memory availability, or execution context. These constraints should be explicitly documented. Clear documentation helps developers understand where abstractions may break down and allows systems to be designed with those limits in mind, rather than discovering them through failures late in development.
Embrace understanding of the lower layers: Middleware reduces the amount of hardware-specific code engineers must write, but it does not remove the need to understand the hardware. When issues arise, debugging often requires tracing behavior through middleware and the HAL, down to the silicon. Teams that treat middleware as a complete substitute for hardware knowledge struggle when edge cases emerge.
In summary, leaky abstractions are an inherent characteristic of embedded systems, not a design failure. By enforcing clean layer boundaries, isolating hardware assumptions, and maintaining awareness of what abstractions do—and do not—guarantee, engineers can effectively contain these leaks. Middleware remains a powerful tool for productivity and reuse, provided it is used with architectural discipline and a clear understanding of the hardware realities beneath it.
Middleware and the Future
Embedded development is shifting away from manual integration toward configuration-centric ecosystems. Modern platforms like Zephyr OS, FreeRTOS, and vendor-specific platforms, such as Nordic's nRF Connect SDK, now bundle the RTOS, middleware, and build systems into a single cohesive environment. Where developers once spent weeks stitching together disparate TCP/IP stacks and file systems, they now manage these via high-level configuration. The developer’s role has evolved from writing “glue code” to managing structured configuration. While the learning curve for these ecosystems can be steep, the payoff is substantial: less boilerplate, fewer vendor-specific quirks, and a focus on core application logic rather than plumbing.
This transition profoundly impacts the industry by accelerating time-to-market. Hardware vendors now provide pre-vetted software stacks that include drivers, network protocols, and security features out of the box, allowing even small startups to access enterprise-grade tools. Furthermore, as development coalesces around major open-source platforms, security patches and best practices propagate faster, raising the baseline for quality and compliance. While this consolidation creates some dependency on platform roadmaps, the benefits of community support and reduced integration risk vastly outweigh the downsides of vendor lock-in.
To navigate this landscape, engineers should embrace these integrated platforms for new projects rather than rebuilding basics from scratch. Success in this modern environment requires mastering configuration management tools as fluently as C code to unlock the full potential of pre-integrated stacks. Developers must also prioritize maintenance by staying current with ecosystem releases to leverage security patches and new features without accruing technical debt. Finally, selecting a platform with an active community and engaging with it for support and contributions is essential to the long-term health and longevity of future projects.

Middleware has become the quiet force multiplier of modern embedded design—powerful not because it eliminates complexity, but because it organizes and contains it. As systems grow more interconnected, feature-rich, and security-sensitive, the value of reliable abstraction only increases. Middleware gives developers the freedom to focus on application behavior rather than wrestling with pin maps, clock trees, and low-level silicon quirks. When used thoughtfully, it enables portability, accelerates development, and supports long-term maintainability across evolving hardware platforms.
